Fit Any Photo to Any Shape Without Losing Anything

A photo taken for one shape rarely fits another. A landscape shot looks cramped as a square, and a portrait gets chopped down to a widescreen banner. Cropping solves the shape problem by throwing away part of the picture, often the part that mattered. Extending solves it the other way: it keeps every pixel and adds new space around it.

How to Extend an Image

  1. Upload your image. Drag a photo onto the drop zone, or click Choose Image and pick a file from your device.
  2. Pick the shape. Choose an aspect ratio such as 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, or enter a custom width and height in pixels.
  3. Position the picture. Choose Left, Centre or Right and Top, Middle or Bottom to decide which side the new space is added to.
  4. Choose the fill. Pick a blurred background, mirrored edges or a solid colour for the new area.
  5. Download. Click Download to save the extended image in the same format as your original.

Which Fill Should You Choose?

  • Blurred background is the safest default. The blurred copy of the photo blends with its colours, so the join rarely shows.
  • Mirror edges carries the picture's own detail into the new space. It works best when the scene reaches the frame on both sides, such as a sky or a wall.
  • Solid colour suits logos, product photos and images with text, where a plain background keeps attention on the subject.

Common Uses

Making a landscape photo square for an Instagram grid, turning a phone portrait into a 16:9 YouTube thumbnail background, adding room for a headline on a banner, or giving a product shot the same canvas as the rest of a catalogue.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does an image extender do?

It adds space around a picture so it fits a different shape, such as square or widescreen, without cropping any of it. The new area is filled with a blurred copy of the photo, mirrored edges, or a solid colour you choose.

How is extending an image different from cropping it?

Cropping removes part of the picture to make it fit. Extending keeps every pixel of the original and adds new space around it. Use extending when the subject is near an edge or when you can't lose any of the scene.

Which fill style should I use?

Blurred background suits most photos because it looks natural and keeps the original's colours. Mirror edges works well when the picture reaches the frame on both sides. Solid colour gives a clean, plain backdrop for logos, product shots and text.

Does the tool use AI to fill the new space?

No. This version fills the new area with blur, mirrored edges or a solid colour, so it is fast and works offline once the page has loaded. It cannot invent new scenery the way AI outpainting can, so a large extension with mirrored edges can look repetitive.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. The picture is read from your device and drawn onto a canvas inside your browser. Nothing is sent to our servers, and the result is downloaded straight to your device.

What image formats can I extend?

You can extend JPEG, PNG and WebP images. The result keeps the same format: PNG stays PNG, WebP stays WebP, and everything else is saved as JPEG.

What size can the result be?

Each side of the result can be up to 6000 pixels, which covers Instagram, YouTube, print at A4 and most desktop wallpapers. Very large canvases can be slow on older phones.

Can I make a photo square for Instagram?

Yes. Choose the 1:1 ratio, then pick where the picture sits. The new space is added on the sides that need it, so the whole photo stays in frame.
